Back to School Indulgence at Larrimor’s

August 31, 2010

Blogger JessPGH of Consume or Consumed writes the following after her recent trip to Larrimor’s at One PNC Plaza…

This Burberry jacket was from the 70% off sale rack at the beautiful and well appointed Larrimor’s in downtown Pittsburgh. I stopped by the new space for the first time the other week and was so impressed by the level of service and attention I received even though it was kind of obvious I was only there to scope the sale.

The salesperson was attentive without being intrusive. She informed me of the sales in men’s and women’s, let me know it would be going on until the stock was gone, and gave me her card. I was pretty excited when I spotted the Burberry jacket hanging in the sale section among a bunch of gorgeous but at the moment for my lifestyle, too-fancy dresses. I was also impressed by the stock. For some reason, I always had an impression that the Pittsburgh shopping institution catered to an older crowd and wouldn’t have things to my taste. That wasn’t the case at all and a number of the fall arrivals caught my eye… Click here to read the full article!

Regarding our Discovery Channel experience…

August 23, 2010

Saturday, August 7th, was not your typical day at Larrimor’s.

At 10am, we were introduced to the Discovery Channel documentary Director and his very cool, camera crew.

At 10:30 am, our “star” arrived. Many of you may be familiar with Reese Randall’s name or face – Reese is the Managing Editor of Pittsburgh Magazine. Reese was asked to share her story in a documentary about overcoming the obstacle of Adult Onset Diabetes.

Reese lives a full, fun, complicated life – juggling the roles of Mom, Wife, Daughter, Sister, and Managing Editor of a monthly magazine. If you know, Reese, you know that she is one of the loveliest, kindest, most pleasant people that you could ever meet.

Reese never mentioned that she had Diabetes, until she asked us to be part of her special project. I remember when Reese just started at Pittsburgh Magazine; it was the same time that I moved home to Pittsburgh. Throughout the years, we became one of Reese’s many raving fans – so we are justifiably
proud to see her accomplish so much!

11:00 Am – Our role was to provide the backdrop to showcase just one small part of the work that Reese does when preparing for a fashion shoot.

We brought in a lovely model to show off the clothing, met Reese’s sister (who is equally fabulous), and even had one of the Larrimor’s team (Mr. Bentley Hicks) play the role of Fashion Photographer.

2pm – The Discovery Channel team packs up to move on to the next location – Reese’s home. While our nerves are calmed, we know that the work is far from finished for Reese and the film crew.

The team filmed for about three hours and fun was had by all. The Discovery Channel team was great – they were pleasant, organized, and knew what they needed to accomplish.

Our only disclaimer, is that after all the fun we had – we learned that our few hours could end up edited to 20-40 seconds on the air. We won’t know until we see the Discovery Channel on October 2nd. No matter what happens, we loved being part of Reese’s big day!

August is Made-to-Measure Month at Larrimor’s

August 9, 2010

Men have all kinds of reason for ordering made-to-measure clothing and all the reasons are  important.  For me, not necessarily in order, I like the fact that I have Thousands of fabrics to choose from.  Colors, finish, weights and patterns are available to select my next suit or sport jacket.  Do I want a Double Breasted suit or blazer?  Should it be a 6 by 4 or a 4 by 1?  Or maybe a Single Breasted 2 button with notch or peak lapel, side vents, center vent or non-vented.  I also love an unexpected solid color lining.  It’s all my choice, it’s me.

Do I want trousers or slacks with pleats or flat front?  My style is always in flux, but I never want to look like a fashionistas.  I want my clothing to be quietly elegant, never a shout.  This is why I like made-to-measure. — J. Carl Slesinger

An Interview with Lisa Michael of Larrimor’s — as seen in the Post-Gazette

July 11, 2010

Third-generation owner steers Downtown Pittsburgh clothier LARRIMOR’S in new location
Sunday, July 11, 2010 By Joyce Gannon, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

As a little girl, Lisa Michael tied bows for boxes at her father’s Downtown clothing store, Larrimor’s.

By her high school years, she and her brother were permitted to work there over the busy Christmas holidays or during school breaks, but only as file clerks or to help with supplies — never in sales. “My parents felt their clients deserved the best experience when they came to the store and that the clients weren’t choosing to shop with us so the children could get practice.”

So Ms. Michael became a waitress at 15, found summer work as a bank teller and never aimed for a career in retail. All she knew when her college graduation approached in 1984 was that she wanted to move to New York City.

Without her parents’ knowledge, she applied for the executive training program at Macy’s department store and was accepted. When she arrived in New York, she lobbied hard to work at Macy’s flagship location at Herald Square “and got what I thought I wanted.”
